Janusz Korczak was a well-known doctor and author who ran a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw from 1911 to 1942. Korczak and his staff volunteered to stay with their children as German authorities deported them all to their deaths at Treblinka in August 1942.
Refusing the several opportunities to save himself from deportation, he and the staff chose to stay with about 200 children and marched together to the Umschlagplatz, and were deported to the Treblinka Extermination Center (see memorial for Janusz Korczak) where they were murdered in the gas chamber.
He is revered in Poland.
