Maximillian Kolbe
Fr. Kolbe was a Franciscan priest who was sent to Auschwitz in 1941. After a prisoner tried to escape the camp, 10 prisoners were selected to starve to death as a lesson for the entire camp. One of the prisoners chosen was Franciszek Gajowniczek, who asked for mercy. He mentioned that he had a wife and children. Fr. Kolbe offered to die in his place.
Fr. Kolbe was imprisoned at Pawiak prison in Warsaw.
He was brought into this cell along with several other prisoners who were condemned to starvation.
