Janusz Korczak

Janusz Korczak was a well-known doctor and author who ran a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw from 1911 to 1942. Korczak and his staff volunteered to stay with their children as German authorities deported them all to their deaths at Treblinka in August 1942.

Refusing the several opportunities to save himself from deportation, he chose to stay with the children and was deported along with about 200 children from the orphanage, to Treblinka Extermination Center where they were murdered in the gas chamber.

He is revered in Poland.

From October 7, 1912 until early August 1942, he ran the "Dom Sierot" (Orphanage) at 92 Krochmalna Street, which provided shelter for orphaned Jewish children from Warsaw. At that time, his closest collaborator was Stefania Wilczyńska.

Janusz Korczak Monument in Warsaw at Świętokrzyski Park . The monument was erected at the site of a house for Jewish orphans, from which Janusz Korczak, staff and around 200 orphans set off on their march to the Umschlagplatz and were deported to Treblinka Extermination Center where they were they died in the gas chamber. Every year, around June 1st, on Children's Day, trips from Warsaw schools go to the monument.
