The White Rose was a resistance group stationed in Munich, Germany, consisting of a number of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. They created an anonymous leaflet campaign calling for active opposition to the Nazis regime.
On February 18, 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholls were distributing flyers at Munich University. Sophie pushed a stack of flyers off of a railing into the central hall. This was seen by a janitor, a staunch supporter of the Nazis, who had Hans and Sophie immediately arrested by the Gestapo. Christoph Probs and Will Graf, Alexander Schmorell and professor Kurt Huber were also arrested,
They confessed to distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. They were tried, found guilty of treason and sentenced to die by guillotine.
